An internal door with sidelights should be selected as a complete configuration, not as an isolated internal door leaf with panels added afterwards. The frame, mullions, door and sidelights need to work together so that the opening is square, the operating clearances are correct and the glazing lines remain properly aligned.

Start With the Structural Opening

The key measurement is the finished structural opening, not the nominal door leaf size. Be sure to record the width at three points and the height at three points, then work from the smallest dimension. Check the floor build-up before confirming the height. Screed, underlay, timber flooring or tiles fitted later can materially reduce the available opening.

Next, compare the opening with the overall frame size and the trimming tolerance shown for the exact product. Trimming allowances are also configuration-specific and must not be transferred from one model to another.

If the project involves forming or creating a wider opening, confirm whether the wall is load-bearing and whether the change affects fire separation, services or access. Building control input and a structural design may be needed before the doorset is installed.

Construction, Glass and Finish

Plan the Handing and Ironmongery

Unlike internal French doors sets and sliding room dividers which are typically set to open one way, with internal doors with matching sidelights, you can often choose which way you'd like the door to swing. Choose which way you'd like it to hang before installation so that the leaf clears furniture, walls, circulation routes and ultimately makes transitioning between adjoining spaces as easy as possible. Some configurations allow the door to be hung from either mullion, but this must be confirmed against the chosen set. Handles, latches, hinges and other ironmongery may be supplied separately, it’s important to check the product contents rather than assuming the hardware is included.

Accurate setting out matters across the full width. The frame must be installed plumb, level and square, with the mullions fixed correctly so the glazed sidelights remain stable and the internal door operates without binding.
