What are U-Values?

The U Value of a door is used by architects to design the thermal performance of an overall structure, which in part includes the door and frame. The heat loss from buildings is affected by many attibutes including the wall design, roof design and window and door designs. The main areas are those with the biggest surface areas so the design of walls and roof insulation are the main factors, but door and windows do play a part. For existing buildings, Building Regulation Part L requires windows to meet a minimum requirement of 1.6W/m2K and glazed doors are also 1.6W/m2K (or 1.8W/m2K when replacing existing doors). However, better performing products might be specified by architects as part of the overall building design to meet a particular building design standard, and sometimes windows are specified at 1.4w/m2K, the requirement for both windows and doors in new builds.

The higher the U value of a product, the lower the level of thermal insulation - hence the greater the heat loss. So in essence high U values mean worse performance. Our double glazed aluminium external bifold & French doors have a U-value of 1.4W/m2K, whilst our uPVC patio doors can get down to 1.3W/m2K, meaning all Climadoor patio doors are Part L compliant even for new builds. What is an engineered Oak veneered internal door?

Our doors are manufactured using LVL (Laminated Veneered Lumber). This is more commonly known as engineered timber and is the most modern method of construction retaining the stunning looks of oak whilst ensuring economical use of available natural timber resources. The main parts, including stiles and rails of the door are usually constructed using solid strips/blocks of timber (some internals may contain a laminated board and/or particleboard), which are then glued and then clamped together. This gives guaranteed stability as the internal stresses of any timber parts work against each other to keep the pieces straight. They are then faced with a veneer and edged with a solid timber lipping, which is normally anywhere between 8 and 18mm thick.

The benefits of using engineered construction doors over more traditional methods are; The door is more cost effective to produce, bringing the price of oak doors into everyones budget, It is far more unlikely to bow, twist, or split like solid oak doors can and possibly the most important reason is that it is much more Eco friendly making the best use of our natural resources!

Can your Roomfold Standard and Roomfold Deluxe sets be trimmed to fit our existing opening?

All our Roomfold sets can be trimmed on both height and width to fit existing openings. Its a simple calculation Outer frame sizes can be reduced in width by a maximum of 12mm per door - so if you have a 3 doors then 3 x 12mm equals 36mm. Or if you have 5 doors 5 x 12mm equals 60mm. 

On height - all oak door options can be reduced by 70mm in height, as long as the trimming is done of both the top and bottom of the door - proportionately to the top and bottom rail sizes. All cut edges must be sealed fully afterwards to prevent moisture ingress which will affect the door if it not sealed properly. Whilst you will be cutting into the core material of the door - the doors will work fine as long as the correct fixing screws are used.
