External Door Frames

Door frames provide a solid base to fit your external door on, and your door frame can even impact the longevity of your door and how energy efficient it is. An incorrectly fitted door frame, or door frame that has weakened over time, can lessen your doors ability to provide insulation and even cause your door to stick when opening and closing. 

A door frame's main purpose is to provide a seal around the door opening and will cover any exposed brickwork or plaster, esentially "filling" the gap between the interior and exterior of your home. You’ll need different kinds of door frames, depending on if you have a hinged door or sliding door. 

Hinged doors: Hinged doors use a traditional door frame which is a solid wooden frame. Hinges are attached to the door and the frame and the door can then open and close on the hinges. 

Sliding doors and Bifold Doors: At Climadoor, we’re known for the outstanding quality of our external bifold doors, so of course we have made door frames to match. These types of doors have a door frame included that features a ‘track’ the door can slide across. Folding doors use hinges to connect to the door frame and then tracks to easily slide open and closed.   

If you have some basic DIY knowledge, you can definitely fit your own external door frame. It can be more complicated than it seems though so if in doubt, get a tradesman in to do the job!

There are benefits and drawbacks to almost all materials, but with the proper maintenance and care, a new door frame should last you for years. We recommend choosing a external door frame that is the same material as your door. This ensures they match each other and don’t clash. 

Composite materials like engineered oak can offer you the aesthetic of a solid timber door frame but are far less work to keep in good shape.
